Almost everyone has been touched by cancer at some point. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Scottish women. Every year around 4,000 women in Scotland are diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s more than 10 a day. One in ten women in Scotland will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. However there is good news. In the 1980s around 6 out of 10 women with breast cancer in Scotland survived beyond five years. Now it’s more than 8 out of 10. Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of this progress..

FORT WILLIAM’S 5K RUN TOGETHER 2012 FOR
CANCER RESEARCH UK

Organised by local fundraising group Lochaber Together, Fort William’s second annual 5K Run Together event was held on Saturday 28th April. Over 300 competitors of all ages and abilities gathered at the BA Club to walk, jog or run the 5K course in aid of Cancer Research UK.

There was a great atmosphere, with the sun shining and many spectators there to show their support. Also there to support the cause was the Ben Nevis cheerleaders - who performed a cheerleading display and cheered the competitors over the start line - and local strongmen, who done a dramatic truck pull demonstration after the race.

After a poignant balloon release in memory of loved ones, kindly organised by Highland Weddings & Events, the race was officially started by the provost Allan Henderson. First to cross the finish line was local youngster Craig MacLean, who was also first across the finish line last year. He achieved a superb time of 17:05, beating last years time of 18:42. Second to complete the 5K course was John Treasurer followed by Bruce MacLean, Craig’s younger brother, Every competitor completing the 5K course was rewarded with a Cancer Research UK medal and goody bag.

The young ones were kept amused throughout the day by the bouncy castle and new bouncy slide provided by Fort William Bouncy Castle Hire, face painting, circus skills and balloon modelling by Graham from Fuzzy & Britta’s Circus School and fascinating strawberry DNA experiments with Cancer Research UK scientists.

Adam Ramsey, Chairman of the Lochaber Together for Cancer Research UK said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our sponsors who helped to make this event a success, to everyone that and worked hard to make the event happen and to everyone that came along to take part or contribute. Everybody had a fantastic day and we are thrilled with the amount we have raised so far. Cancer Research UK are dedicated to beating cancer and we will continue to help them achieve this.” So far, the total raised by the event is a fantastic around £8000 and rising. Lochaber Together would like to urge all competitors to hand in their remaining sponsor money in to the Cancer Research UK shop on the High Street as soon as possible so that a final total can be calculated.

All the money raised by the 5K Run Together event will go directly to Cancer Research UK, who are the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They have played a leading role in many of the major breakthroughs in cancer treatment over the last 100 years and over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by Cancer Research UK scientists. Their pioneering research into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer has saved millions of lives and they are making dramatic progress towards their goal of beating cancer.

Thanks to the groundbreaking work of Cancer Research UK more people are beating cancer than ever before. However, there is much more to be done and the charity receives no government funding, so events such as the 5K Run Together are essential in the fight to beat cancer.

More events will be organised by Lochaber Together for Cancer Research UK throughout the year, and it has been announced that the 5K Run Together family event will be held on Saturday 27th April next year. Registration for the event will be starting soon. In the mean time, if any individual or group wants to hold their own fundraising event, our local You Can Ambassador, Kirsty Johnson, will be more than happy to provide help and advice.
